How can TETRA compete in the broadband era was one of the hot topics at the recent Critical Communications World in Amsterdam.

How can TETRA compete in the broadband era was one of the hot topics at the recent Critical Communications World in Amsterdam, which took place on 31 May and 01 June. Nick Smye, Mason Advisory Principal Consultant had a busy few days at the event: he chaired a session on TETRA in the critical national infrastructure sector and also presented a paper ‘Who is actually using TETRA for SCADA, Smart Grid and Telemetry?’.

Smye also facilitated the ‘Power Roundtables’, with guests invited from the transport, utility, and oil and gas sectors. This explored the use of broadband and other special factors needed for these sectors, considering the issue of whether it was possible to take a service from a third party rather than building a dedicated network.

He said: “It was a really interesting session. People want to know how TETRA is moving forward both in terms of the technology and in terms of the operating and business models. There’s no ‘right answer’, but we are seeing developments in this area.”
