Police, camera, action!

Getting the best from body-worn video

Download Paper

Body-worn video (BWV) cameras are increasingly being adopted by the police and other emergency services. As well as ensuring the wearer is accountable for their actions, there are also benefits around staff protection and automated evidence gathering.

Ideally any BWV project should be undertaken as part of the overall ICT development and implementation work, with full awareness and reference to the rest of a force’s ICT improvement programme.

Many organisations are (for reasons of expediency and cost) deploying BWV in a stand-alone manner that risks undermining the eventual benefits. This paper discusses these risks and how they might be addressed. Specifically it considers:

  • the technology behind BWV cameras
  • the challenge of integrating BWV with the rest of the IT systems, including security, storage and software
  • recommendations for how to approach BWV deployment.
